Request a Moratorium!
If you’re concerned about the haphazard development of hyper scale AI data centers, you can help by getting a moratorium passed in your city and county. Here’s what to do:
Email your county commissioner/city council members and request that they draft an ordinance for a temporary moratorium on data centers. Ask that your friends in other cities and counties/part of your county do the same.
Include examples that they can reference such as:
Inver Grove Heights (pdf)
Wright County Emergency Moratorium on data centers (Monticello’s data centers are involved in MCEA lawsuit)
List your reasoning why you’re asking them to enact a moratorium. Make it personal. Include any stats on data centers you feel are necessary. An email template is included as a reference but remember this is not a robo call for state legislators.
Here’s a podcast episode with Blaine from Menomonie talking about why moratoriums are needed, the data center playbook, tactics developers use and what it’s been like in WI.
You can download and personalize this letter to request a moratorium. Email it to your community leaders, including your city administrator, mayor, council members and EDA director! You can find their email addresses on your official city website.
